When someone tells me I’m a vegan or vegetarian, what comes to mind first? Let me guess, someone who does not eat meat right? Well, part of which is true, but there are different types of vegetarians, and lacto-ovo-vegetarian, vegan and macrobiotic. A lacto-ovo vegetarians do not eat meat or fish, but eats dairy and eggs. A vegan excludes meat, fish, dairy products, eggs, and no animal products, most vegetarians reference type. Macrobiotic diets are not necessarily vegetarian, but are mainly based on cereals, legumes and vegetables. Although I am not a big fan of vegan diets, I’m not saying they can not work. A well-balanced vegetarian diet should pay special attention to the following sources: adequate intake of protein, essential fatty acids, iron, zinc, calcium and vitamins B and D.
Supplementation may be necessary in cases of strict vegetarian diet without animal products. If done right, then there are positive results vegan diets and end of the day if you are a vegetarian and live a healthier, more power to you. Now the real question is, vegetarian diets are optimal for the health of children? Before starting this, in my biased opinion, I disagree with parents who are raising their young children in vegan diets for several reasons. A major reason is that parents do not fulfill their children a nutritious diet, as it is, much less a vegan diet is supposed to be more stringent and could lead to health problems deficit reduction path if it hurts.
They are essential fatty acids and amino acids important for growing children? Of course, that is, our body does not produce naturally, and a child is not going to go buy my share of fish oil and BCAA in a vitamin store. Since vegan diets exclude fish protein and of animals, which are fatty acids and amino acids come from? This is the biggest problem. They do not come from nowhere because most parents are unaware of how these nutrients are essential for optimal growth and health in general. If parents are not aware of the importance of omega-3 and omega-6 and amino acids, the way a child should know this? The human brain needs more long-chain essential fatty acids known as “DHA” and “EPA”, found in omega-3 fatty acids for proper development. There are a handful of research to support this theory.
Children with vegetarian diets are deficient in vitamins and minerals that can lead to a lack of growth? Energy expenditure, also known as the “metabolic rate” could be at risk with restrictive vegetarian diet due to lack of vitamins, minerals and nutrients it provides. Some of the vegetarian subjects, however, seem to have difficulty meeting energy needs. Basically, if a vegetarian diet is the right way, then the children can have an optimal growth and are not deficient in vitamins and minerals, but it is possible that the lack of energy.
What other potential deficiencies can occur if a child is subjected to a vegan diet? Child nutrition is critical for adults, due to the fact that they grow and become adults at some point in time. As children grow, they are at a developmental stage tender for the brain, muscles and bones. Every bit of good nutrition is essential for growth and parents must understand that the bottom line! It has also been research that when the mother is pregnant and on a vegan diet, the baby may be born with an underdeveloped brain and central nervous system are hungry because of not getting enough vitamins, minerals and nutrients through proper nutrition during pregnancy. An underdeveloped brain can lead to learning difficulties. Some of the symptoms seen in children, if fed a vegan diet are: loss of short-term memory, hands and feet are cold, because of not getting the proper amount of nutrients from animal fats to support adrenaline and functions of the thyroid and sleep disorders.
Vegan diets can lead to childhood obesity? Depending on the vegan diet is, of course, a child can put on fat on a vegan diet. If the father is just to feed their children, “the high-glycemic carbs” and not protein or fat, which can cause a large insulin spike and will most likely go to the fat cells rather than cells muscle and then stored and lead to an accumulation of fat. Well, everyone should know that sugar is the devil, and do not lead to an accumulation of fat, and if they are pre-diabetic, then just make things worse. What children like most? Nine times out of ten is good old sugar, and sugar a little more. So if the parents feed their children a proper amount of sugar per day, even through a vegetarian diet, then kids will be fat gain and can lead to diabetes in the way.
With all that said, vegetarian diets are optimal for the health of children? In my humble opinion, I disagree with them, but if done correctly and that children control the symptoms and have a healthy lifestyle and active than it should be fine. Someone once told me that vegan diets become more popular in the future, but I disagree, respectively, for all studies and research showing animal fats and animal proteins are the key to longevity and growth muscular. At the end of the day around the world live their lives as they wish, also, either by a paleo diet, the Zone diet, vegetarian diet or a regular diet. What makes a person happy is all that really matters, but for the sake of the children have no control over what they eat is bad. Parents need to learn, regardless of the circumstances, whether you are a vegan or not, the key is to feed their children the proper nutrients your body needs for brain development and overall growth.
